bioLytical Laboratories Proud to Recognize 10th Annual US National LGBT Health Awareness Week

Richmond, B.C. – Mar. 26, 2012. Canadian life sciences firm, bioLytical Laboratories, proudly recognizes National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Health Awareness Week in the US as it marks its 10th anniversary of health advocacy for the LGBT community from March 26-30.

The week-long campaign is an initiative of the National Coalition for LGBT Health, serving as a call to action for community members, advocates, service providers, and government officials to recognize health and wellness as a vital part of the social justice movement for LGBT individuals, their families, and the wider community.

Biolytical is executing activities which, if successful, will make our INSTI HIV-1 Antibody Test more widely available in the US says Colin MacGillivray, CEO of bioLytical Laboratories. Our test, which provides a result in as little as 60 seconds, can overcome the barrier that delayed results present meaning missed opportunities for linkage to care. Linking patients to care ensures the best possible quality of life for individuals impacted by the disease and helps to reduce the spread of HIV.

The HIV/AIDS epidemic is still one of the most critical issues facing the LGBT community according to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), men who have sex with men (MSM) account for 64% of new HIV infections in the US, but comprise only 2% of the US population, says Lesley Schopp, bioLytical Laboratories Vice President, Sales and Marketing. It remains the case that many of those infected are unaware of their status which prevents linkage to care, impacts quality of life and contributes to the continued spread of HIV.

This years theme for LGBT Health Awareness Week Come Out for Health strives to educate, engage and empower the community in understanding the unique health needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people in order to promote more inclusive health care policies and services for all.
