bioLytical Laboratories Supports U.S. National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day Message

Richmond, B.C. – Mar. 8, 2012. Canadian life sciences firm bioLytical Laboratories is in support of this years National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day in the United States on March 10th 2012. This annual nationwide observance encourages people to take action in the fight against HIV/AIDS and raise awareness of its impact on women and girls. It is coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health (OWH).

While men represent the majority of HIV/AIDS cases in the US, both new and existing HIV infections, the impact of HIV/AIDS on women has grown since the beginning of the epidemic and today nearly 300,000 women are living with HIV in the United States says Lesley Schopp, Vice President at Biolytical Laboratories. Learning of an HIV positive status accelerates linkage to care to provide the best possible quality of life for individuals impacted by the disease.

Research shows that women frequently face disproportionate gaps in access to healthcare says Colin MacGillivray, Chief Executive Officer at Biolytical Laboratories. On National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day in the United States we encourage ongoing activities around the world aimed at changing the status quo by improving access to healthcare including education and testing. In the United States this includes measures to be implemented during 2012 under the Affordable Care Act.

National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS awareness day is held on March 10th each year and recognizes how the impact of HIV/AIDS on women has grown in the US since the beginning of the epidemic. It serves as an opportunity for everyone across the country to come together to educate women and girls about prevention, testing, and how to live with and manage the disease.

bioLytical is committed to improving accessibility and efficiency of HIV testing, contributing both to the diagnosis of HIV positive patients, and the process of preventing the spread of infection to others.
